Between June and November, Humpback Whales can be spotted migrating using land markers to assist with navigating their long journey. These beautiful creatures stay relatively close to the coastline allowing for tourist and locals to view them from some beautiful vantage points on shore as well as on tours operated from Byron Bay.
There are a number of great spots on the coastline in Byron Bay that allow for a fantastic view of the whales passing off shore. These vantage points up and down the north eastern coast would be great for a picnic and to explore the beautiful landscape! Here are the most popular places:
If being a little more up close and personal with the whales seems to be more your style; there are a number of Kayaking and Diving tours that you can also take to closely observe these majestic creatures. Cape Byron Marine Park (http://www.mpa.nsw.gov.au/cbmp.html) also offer paddle sessions with Dolphins!
There are also a number of Whale Watching cruises available. These often come with a guarantee whale sighting, lunch and photos of the day! These tours leave from a variety of places and also have a guide that is full of handy information about these beautiful oceanic giants.
